Medium-size businesses
You have the numbers. You still need direction.
For owner-managed South African businesses, typically R20m to R100m in turnover. Strategic finance support, proactive tax planning, and a partner who walks the major cash and growth decisions with you, without hiring a full-time CFO.

Growth makes financial blind spots more expensive.
Reports explain what happened. They rarely tell you what to do next. At your size, guessing on cash, tax and expansion is the costliest mistake you can make.
Profitable on paper. Short on cash.
Working capital tightens as you grow. Payroll, stock, debtors and SARS all pull in different directions. The bank balance no longer tells a simple story.
More people, products and projects. Harder numbers.
What used to fit in your head now spans departments, entities and product lines. You cannot tell which customers, jobs or branches actually earn their keep.
Major calls still land on your desk alone.
Hiring, expansion, funding, pricing, capex. You carry decisions that affect your family, staff and future without enough confidence in the picture beneath them.
Is this you?
Here is how you can assess if this is for you
You are likely in the right place
- You are still the one who says yes on hiring, pricing, expansion and capex, not a board or a CFO who reports to someone else
- Turnover sits roughly between R20m and R100m, or you are scaling hard toward that band and last year’s spreadsheet habits are starting to crack
- Compliance is handled: books are done, returns are filed. What is missing is someone who tells you what the numbers mean for your next move
- You are done hearing from your accountant only at year-end. You want a partner who sits with you between reports, not just after them
- You cannot say for certain which products, branches or customers actually make you money, and that gap is starting to cost you
A different page may fit better
- Under roughly R2.3m and still catching up on books or SARS → Micro Businesses or GrowClear
- R2.3m to R20m and need monthly clarity, not full CFO-level strategy → Small Businesses or GrowthPath
- Sole proprietor or freelancer → Sole proprietors
- NPC, NPO, trust or personal tax only → see our other Who We Serve pages
What counts as a medium-size business?
In South Africa, official size bands look at turnover and headcount. For our work, the useful question is simpler: are you past basic compliance, still owner-led, and making decisions that need CFO-level thinking without a full-time finance executive?
That usually means turnover in the R20m to R100m range, a PTY (or group of entities), payroll and VAT in the mix, and growth that has outpaced how you read the numbers. You may already have a bookkeeper, accountant or internal finance staff. What is missing is someone who connects the reports to the decisions in front of you.
If you are below that band but growing quickly, GrowthPath is often the right first step. If you are firmly in this band, Entrepreneurial CFO is built for you.

The plan
Assess, build the rhythm, navigate the decisions.
01
Assess the position
We review reporting, cash flow, tax exposure, systems and your current priorities. You get a clear view of the gaps between the information you have and the decisions you need to make.
02
Build the financial rhythm
We strengthen management reporting, forecasting, KPIs and review routines around how your business actually runs. Timely information you can act on before problems become expensive.
03
Navigate the decisions
Regular sessions to interpret the numbers, challenge assumptions, and guide calls on cash, tax, profitability, funding and growth. You move forward with clarity, not guesswork.
Entrepreneurial CFO
CFO-level thinking. Without the full-time hire.
Strategic finance support for medium-size, owner-managed businesses: management reporting and analysis, cash and working-capital forecasting, tax planning tied to cash, KPI and profitability reviews, and regular decision sessions with leadership. We work alongside your existing team where you have one.
Fees are scoped to your business on a consultation. Full accounting packages at this size often start from R36,000 per month. We confirm your number honestly once we understand your setup.
What is at stake
The cost of staying stuck vs. what changes when the numbers start working for you.
Without a strategic partner
- Growth compounds blind spots in cash, tax and profitability
- Expansion, hiring and capex stay reactive instead of tested
- SARS and working capital still surprise you at the worst moment
- Reports pile up while the owner carries the weight alone
With Entrepreneurial CFO
- Cash and tax planned before pressure hits
- You see which lines, customers and projects actually drive profit
- Major decisions tested against forecasts, not hope
- A finance function that scales with the business, without a full-time CFO seat

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers for medium-size, owner-managed businesses.
Do we need a full-time CFO at our size?
Not always. Many businesses between R20m and R100m need CFO-level thinking before they can justify a full-time executive salary, benefits and equity. Entrepreneurial CFO gives you strategic finance support on a partnership basis until the business is ready to hire internally, or alongside a junior finance team you already have.
We already have a bookkeeper or internal finance staff. Can you work with them?
Yes. At this size that is common. We are not here to replace every finance seat. We strengthen reporting, planning and decision support, and we coordinate with your existing team so compliance keeps running while strategy improves.
What is the difference between GrowthPath and Entrepreneurial CFO?
GrowthPath is for owner-managed businesses roughly R2.3m to R20m that need monthly clarity, management accounts and guided money decisions. Entrepreneurial CFO is for businesses that have outgrown that band, or need deeper forecasting, tax strategy and leadership-level decision support. If your books are not yet current, GrowClear or GrowthPath is usually the right first step.
Is it worth changing accountants at this stage?
It is worth reviewing if you are profitable but still flying blind, if tax feels reactive, or if you only hear from your accountant at year-end. Switching at medium size is more common than owners expect. We handle onboarding and coordinate with your previous firm so the handover is orderly.
What do you need from us to get started?
Recent management or annual accounts, bank statements, payroll summaries, tax correspondence and access to your accounting system, once engaged. On the first call we tell you exactly what is missing and what to fix first if records are not yet clean.
How much does it cost?
Entrepreneurial CFO is scoped to your business after we understand turnover, complexity, entities, payroll and how much partner time you need. Our prices for full packages at this size often start from R36,000 per month. We confirm your fee on a consultation. For GrowthPath businesses below R20m, see transparent package estimates on our pricing page.
Scaling up from below?
GrowthPath for R2.3m to R20m.
Monthly management accounts, cash visibility and guided decisions before you need full CFO support.
