NPCs / NPOs

Your mission is not paperwork. Your compliance still matters.

For South African non-profit companies, NPOs and NGOs. Annual financial statements, SARS and CIPC compliance, grant reporting and governance support so your board can focus on impact, not admin fires.

Good causes still face real compliance obligations.

Directors and trustees carry personal responsibility. Donors and funders expect clean records. SARS and CIPC do not grant exemptions from filing because the work is meaningful.

Annual returns and AFS deadlines slip.

CIPC annual returns, audited or independently reviewed statements, and NPO Directorate renewals compete with programme delivery for attention.

Grant reporting does not match the books.

Funders want project-level reporting. Volunteer treasurers do their best, but the numbers are hard to defend when questions arrive.

Tax status is unclear.

PBO registration, VAT, PAYE for staff, and donor receipt rules each have their own requirements. Getting it wrong puts funding and reputation at risk.

Is this you?

Here is how you can assess if this is for you

You are likely in the right place

  • You are a registered NPC, NPO, NGO, trust-based NPO or similar non-profit entity
  • You need annual financial statements and compliance filings handled properly
  • You have staff, volunteers or contractors and PAYE may apply
  • Donors, boards or funders expect accountable reporting
  • You want a firm that understands non-profit governance, not only commercial PTYs

NPC vs NPO: what is the difference?

An NPC (non-profit company) is registered with CIPC under the Companies Act. An NPO is registered with the Department of Social Development under the NPO Act. Many organisations hold both registrations, or operate through a trust structure with NPO status.

Each path has filing duties: annual financial statements, CIPC returns, NPO renewal, SARS registrations, and sometimes PBO approval from SARS for tax-exempt status. We help boards understand which obligations apply and keep them current.

Frequently asked questions

Do NPOs pay tax?

Not automatically. Many seek PBO status from SARS for exemption on approved activities, but registration, reporting and partial tax obligations still apply. We advise on your specific structure.

Do we need an audit or independent review?

It depends on your governing documents, income level, funder rules and the Companies Act requirements for NPCs. We help you meet the correct standard and coordinate with auditors where required.

Can you help with NPO Directorate renewal?

Yes. We support the financial and compliance information needed for NPO registration and renewal, alongside CIPC duties where you are also an NPC.

We are volunteer-run. Can you still help?

Yes. Many NPOs start with volunteer treasurers. We provide the professional layer so volunteers are not carrying SARS and CIPC risk alone.

How much does non-profit accounting cost?

Fees depend on staff count, grant complexity, transaction volume and whether audit or review is required. We quote after understanding your entity and filing history.
